NB IoT is smarter than WiFi for temperature monitoring because it works over the mobile network: no password, no router that drops out, and it measures even in the cellar. A sensor on NB IoT lasts for years on a single battery.

What is NB IoT exactly?

NB IoT stands for Narrowband Internet of Things. It is a mobile network built specifically for small devices that send a little bit of data now and then, such as a temperature sensor. Where your phone needs a fat connection for video and photos, a sensor only has a few numbers to send: the temperature of your fridge and whether everything is still fine. NB IoT is designed for exactly that kind of message.

Because it runs over the same network of the telecom providers as your mobile phone, the sensor needs no connection of its own in your business. No cable, no WiFi, no settings. You hang up the box and it finds the network by itself. That does not just make it easy, it also makes it far more reliable for something that has to keep measuring day and night.

Why is WiFi awkward for temperature monitoring?

WiFi is fine for browsing on your phone, but for monitoring that has to run non stop it is fragile. Think of what goes wrong in practice: the WiFi password changes and the sensor drops out. The router restarts at night or stutters for a moment. The signal does not reach the back kitchen or the cellar where your fridge stands. Someone accidentally connects it to the wrong network.

The annoying part is that WiFi can let you down at exactly the moment you need your monitoring most. If the power fails, your router usually fails too. That is precisely when you want a warning about your fridge, but over WiFi there is nothing left that can send a message. A system that depends on your network is only as reliable as your busiest night and your oldest router.

Monitoring should not depend on your router

WiFi goes down during a power cut, exactly when you need an alarm. NB IoT runs over the mobile network and has its own battery, so it keeps measuring when your router is briefly gone.

Does NB IoT also work in a cellar or cold room?

Yes, and that is one of the biggest advantages. Many hospitality fridges and freezers do not stand in the kitchen but in a cellar, a back kitchen or behind thick walls. Exactly the places where WiFi often does not reach and where even ordinary mobile coverage falls short. NB IoT is designed to penetrate deep into buildings and has coverage across the whole country, including underground and behind concrete.

That means you can place the sensor where your fridge simply happens to be, without first having to extend your network or run an extension cable. The box measures through one thin probe of about one meter, which goes through the door seal into your fridge or freezer. This way the door stays closed and the measurement does not disturb your cooling at all.

How long does the battery last?

Because NB IoT uses so little energy to send a message, the battery lasts for years. You do not have to charge anything and there is no plug that can accidentally come loose. If the network does drop out for a while, the box stores the measurements locally and sends them on as soon as the connection is back. That way you miss no measurement in your HACCP records, not even during a brief outage.

The advantages in a row:

  • No WiFi, no password, no settings. You hang up the box and it works.
  • Works in cellars, back kitchens and cold rooms where WiFi and normal coverage do not reach.
  • Keeps measuring during a power cut, thanks to the mobile network and its own battery.
  • Years on a single battery, without charging or maintenance.
  • Nationwide coverage, even in spots where your phone barely has signal.

What does this mean for you as a business owner?

In concrete terms it means your monitoring simply keeps working, without you having to do anything for it. No IT hassle, no sensor that drops out after a router update, no dead spot in the cellar. Coolwatcher uses NB IoT precisely because a fridge has to be watched day and night, and that is only possible with a connection that does not depend on your network. In ten minutes the box is up, and after that you never have to think about it.
